Note on Workshops
Besides teaching at Feather River Art Camp and the Mendocino Art Center, Harlan also teaches ongoing glass bead making classes - usually given monthly in two sections, on a Thursday night, 5-9 pm, and then the very next day, Friday, all day, 9:30-5:00 pm, at Oakland's Historic public art studio, Studio One. These classes are stand-alone, meaning you can take one without the other. There is accrued practice and learning benefit, though, of taking the two sections together, back to back. Please call Studio One at 510 597 5027 for registration information. All materials included in the tuition fee. Discounts available for Seniors, Teens, and Oakland Residents.
Harlan teaches every two weeks or so on Wednesday nights, 6-10 pm, at Aanraku Glass Studios, 41 S. Railroad Avenue, in San Mateo. Email me to register or for more information: harlan@harlanglass.com All materials included in the tuition fee. Brand new beginners are always welcome, and are encouraged to come 45 minutes prior to the official start of class, for free orientation.
The Ancient Art of Flamework Glass Beadmaking - What is It?
Using small, clean burning, and environmentally efficient propane- oxygen torches, professional glass maker and jewelry designer Harlan Simon takes you step by step through the basics of flamework bead making. Flamework is the crown jewel of the vitreous arts. More than 4,000 years old, the process involves the magical, mesmerizing winding of molten glass onto hand spun metal rods. In a safe, supportive environment, Harlan’s workshop(s) offers glass making history, from its Mesopotamian roots to the modern North American Studio Movement, review of safety and tools, demonstration of fundamental techniques, and practice time. By workshop end, participants will have created multiple glass beads. Workshop content varies depending upon student skill level, interest, and workshop duration, but include some or all of the following: Basic bead formation and shaping, making and using design components, including glass stringers and multicolored “twisties” use of design techniques, such as dotting, plunging, raking, “pinwheeling,” “masking,” clear casing, use of frits, discussion of color and design theory, use of dichroic and reactive glass, and use of inclusions (silver foil, millifioris, etc.). There are an unlimited number of techniques to learn and practice, leading to a multitude of styles and opportunities for personal expression. Flamework is also fun and relaxing!
Harlan teaches with 104 COE glass cane (primarily Italian) on oxygen- propane torches.
Jump in, the lure of creative illumination beckons!
Please contact Harlan directly if you have questions or need more information. Harlan@harlanglass.com
